Ducati 851 Tricolore (Kit)

The 851 was responsible for transforming the Ducati brand from one catering purely for the loyal enthusiast to one of a truly international broad appeal as it is today, which was no mean feat.

The 851 was launched at the 1987 Milan Show but the first bikes were not delivered until June 1988. Just 300 Strada versions of the 851 were produced, together with 200 Kit versions which was the minimum number needed to homologate the type for World Superbike Racing.

Marco Lucchinelli, the former 500cc World Champion, who carried out most of the initial track testing for the Ducati four valve engine, won the very first World Super Bike Race at Donington Park, England in 1988.

The Kit version of the 851 was very similar in appearance to the Strada version. Both shared the same distintive red, white and green colour scheme which soon became known as the Tricolore.
